JJIM.

Anna, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role at our site?

Anna

My name is Anna, and I have been serving as the Environmental Sustainability Officer at our site since March 2024. In this role, I oversee the development and execution of our Environmental Sustainability Roadmap, ensuring alignment with Johnson & Johnson’s global climate goals and our site-specific objectives. My primary focus is to implement sustainable initiatives that support our long-term goals of achieving carbon neutrality and circularity, all while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across our organization.

To start with, can you explain the focus points for the coming years and why we are beginning here?

Anna

Our sustainability focus areas are shaped by Johnson & Johnson’s global climate commitments and our site’s specific ambitions.

We have identified carbon emission reduction and circularity as our primary pillars, driving the most significant impact. Supporting these efforts are our data-driven sustainability approach and sustainability-informed decision-making, which enable us to track progress and make informed choices.

These focus areas were established through comprehensive assessments, including leadership work sessions, to ensure we effectively tackle both global and local sustainability challenges.

What were the key sustainability achievements and milestones in 2024?

Anna

2024 has been a productive year in terms of sustainability. One of the key initiatives was the Sustainable Heat Project, through which we refined our carbon emission reduction portfolio and included EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) measures in the scope for business case evaluation and to ensure compliance.

In addition, we secured Green Power Contracts for Sassenheim and Gaubius. We have also defined a Sustainable Steam Strategy for purchasing sustainable steam.

On the recycling front, we engaged with vendors for Recycling Pilots at our site. Moreover, we have started a test phase for integrating sustainability into the Need Statement Process.

Another important initiative is the introduction of a new Sustainability Training in our Induction training sessions, developed by our WeSustain team. Finally, we completed a Biodiversity Survey at our site.

What are the key focus areas for 2025?

Anna

By 2025, we will continue to focus on sustainability efforts. With Green Energy Contracts, we will continue to work with external suppliers to ensure that our site, including expansions and new acquisitions, are powered by renewable energy sources, with the aim of zero future carbon emissions for both Scope 1 and Scope 2.

In addition, the installation of Solar Panels on our bicycle shed is planned for Q2, with potential follow-up actions in Q3. We also continue to support research into recycling options for Single-Use Bags and are working on a Waste Reduction Strategy.

Another key focus area is Employee Engagement, through which we aim to expand employee engagement based on their interests and expertise by restructuring the WeSustain team, fostering a stronger sustainability culture.
