Batch Release made easy!
The JJIM. (then called JBVandaag) asked a number of retirees how they are doing now, whether they fell into a black hole after their JBV/Centocor period, whether they miss the work and how they spend their days now. Following a number of pensioners in previous editions, this time Stef Keur gives us a glimpse into his current life.
Most of you will know me from my managerial roles within Quality Control. Logical, since that's where I worked for the last 15 years of my career. At my farewell dinner, it was a surprise even to my closest colleagues to hear that I still feel like a production guy, after all, I started at Centocor in Production at Downstream Processing one fine summer day in 1987. After studying Biochemistry/Neurochemistry in Utrecht, Centocor/Janssen was my first and at the same time my last employer. My 'beautiful' handwritten cover letter must have made an impression. It is a museum piece, because it is the only cover letter I ever sent. At the time, I was the 48th employee (now there are more than 2,000!).
In total, I have been employed at Centocor/Janssen for 37 years. My last working day was February 29 last year, when I was 65 years old. In preparation for retirement, I had already started working fewer hours in the last six months and started a photography course. Last November I finished it with a very nice graduation assignment: 'The interaction between people and their pets'. In the process, I met lots of interesting people and animals, including my dear former colleague Sara, her husband Diogo and their two beautiful greyhounds!

Leen van Eylen with Stef: “I know Leen from the old days when we worked a lot with the labs of other sites. Leen was head of the lab in Schaffhausen. That was a super nice time, where André and I represented Leiden. Leen stopped by to say goodbye in person.”

A reunion dinner – Working at Janssen was wonderful for me and gave me much more than I could have ever dreamed of, but I also wanted to do other things and meet other people again. It was nice to be able to wind down in the last year and hand over all my duties to my capable successors. When I walked out through the revolving door of the R building for the last time as a J&J staff member on February 29 last year, it was really over. The farewell was a big surprise for me: so many kind messages and people who wanted to say goodbye in person, sometimes with dinner, sometimes with a short conversation.
“Don't wait until retirement to do fun things”
The biggest surprise, however, was that Monique and my daughters Dianne and Eline attended the farewell dinner. That was very beautiful and emotional for me. Fortunately, former colleagues still want contact with me now. I meet some for a catch-up walk (I like to stay informed about all of J&J's ongoings) or we go bird watching. And a reunion dinner with my last team is planned for mid-April. I'm really looking forward to that!
What I miss (and what I don't) – What I miss are the many spontaneous corridor conversations with colleagues and the one-on-one conversations, which were not only about work, but also about important issues 😉 And I realize even more now how enriching it has been to be able to work with people from so many different countries and cultures. What I don't miss: the increased bureaucracy due to centralization of support departments. That did not make me happy. Oh yes, and I miss the SEC get-togethers, the opportunity to meet people from other departments (I am more a fan of the more intimate get-togethers than the big parties).
I hope the readers who still work at J&J do so mostly because they enjoy it too. And don't wait until retirement to do fun and exciting things. I didn't do that myself...
“Those who don't like doubt are better off leaving philosophy aside”
Our first grandchild – I am currently active as a volunteer with Humanitas, supporting people in getting their home administration in order. Often these people are on the edge of being just in debt or just out of debt. It can give a lot of peace of mind if the administration is in order. So a little bureaucracy is quite useful.
In the first three months of this year, I took philosophy/theology classes in the new Gorlaeus building. The choice for this was primarily initiated by the death of my father in mid-November of last year. You end up with very different questions then and these lectures gave a chance to think about that more. If you don't like doubting and questioning, philosophy is better left out. Or as one fellow student said, “I know even less now, but at a higher level”. Besides a lot of reading, fitness and padel, I am very much outside: hiking and photographing birds, enjoying spring.
Oops, I almost forgot my most important new occupation: since April 2024, Monique and I have been the proud grandparents of Sanne, our first grandchild! Fantastic to see that little one grow up, and to see your own daughter busy as a mother.
